It’s here! The dreaded cold and flu season. So, what can you do to try to prevent getting these illnesses? One way is to make an effort to try to boost your immune system.

What is an immune system, anyway? According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the overall function of the immune system is to prevent or limit infection. 

Your lifestyle preferences can impact your immune system, positively or negatively. Therefore, it is important to make good choices in order to have a positive impact on your immune system function and general health.

The below are several lifestyle habits that can assist you in boosting your immune system in order to attempt to fight off illness.

  1.  Wash your hands frequently with soap

  2. Avoid constantly touching your face

  3. Take your shoes off in the house

  4. Change your bath towels

  5. Avoid touching things that other people touched 

  6. Drink more water and keep hydrated- add lemon for extra vitamin C

  7. Get more sleep

  8. Change your toothbrush

  9. Don’t share drinking glasses and utensils

  10. Eat nutrient dense foods 

  11. Avoid junk food 

  12. Disinfect surfaces like remotes, phones, toys, doorknobs, and keyboards

  13. Exercise

  14. Avoid shaking hands 

  15. Limit alcohol consumption

  16. Change your sheets and pillowcases

  17. Reduce stress

  18. Avoid sugar 

  19. Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing

  20. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer

Although it might be inevitable that you are in close contact with someone that is ill, prevention and limiting your exposure to germs is important to staying healthy.
