What To Eat And Drink When You Are Sick

You did everything right. You washed your hands constantly, you got the flu shot, and stayed away from sick people. Even though you did everything you were supposed to do, you got sick. Sometimes it is just plain unavoidable despite your best efforts to prevent illness. 

Even though you might not have much of an appetite or feel nauseous, it is important to eat the proper foods in small portions and stay away from certain foods to aid in your recovery. 

The below are 5 foods to eat and drink when you are sick:

1.   Chicken noodle soup or clear broth

Eating chicken noodle soup is not just an old wives’ tale. Turns out it truly is an excellent source of protein, hydration and can ease nasal congestion. A clear broth and/or bone broth is warm and soothing, making it a great source of hydration.

2.   Herbal teas

Drinking herbal teas can help with hydration and breathing in their steam may assist clearing nasal congestion. 

3.   Honey

Add honey to your tea. Honey has antimicrobial compounds which can aid in boosting your immune system and promote healing.

4.   Bananas

Bananas are easy to eat and digest. They are rich in potassium and other antioxidants that can assist in your recovery especially if you have been sweating due to fever or stomach flu.

5.   Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a nutritious food as it contains protein and fiber. Oatmeal also has antioxidants such as vitamin E. tt contains other properties that may strengthen your immune system.

It is a good idea to stay away from certain foods too. For example, dairy can increase mucus production and hinder your recovery. it probably would be best to avoid fried foods and refined carbohydrates since this can result in an inflammatory response and possibly delay your recuperation time.

Or course, get some sleep! Sleeping helps the immune system and you might have a you have a better chance of recovering from illness more quickly if you are catching enough zzzzz’.
